In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. (Barack Obama´s Inaugural Address) On November 4, 2008, 47-year-old Barack Obama walked onto the stage in Grant Park to deliver an Election Night speech less than an hour after he had been officially declared President-Elect of the United States. As he came out to an audience numbering in the hundreds of thousands, with millions more watching on television, the first African-American elected president in the nation´s history told Americans, ´´If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.´´ Although it was a reference to his historic election, the quote applied equally to the very unique path Obama took in life to reach that moment. Though he was still young by presidential standards, the biracial native of Hawaii had already traveled a great distance physically and spiritually, learning about himself and discovering his self-identity along the way. After receiving a blue chip education that took him to Harvard Law School and helped him become a law professor and community organizer in Chicago, he began a rapid ascent through state politics to become a US Senator in 2004. To a degree, Obama´s election in November 2008 was anti-climactic compared to the incredibly close victory he had over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. With 18.2 million votes total, Hillary Clinton had won more votes than any other candidate in the history of the presidential primaries, but it was Obama who won more delegates to become the first African-Ameri 1. Barack Obama is an American politician serving as the 44th President of the United States, and the first African American to hold the office. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney and taught constitutional law at University of Chicago Law School between 1992 and 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, and ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for the United States House of Representatives in 2000 against incumbent Bobby Rush. In 2004, Obama received national attention during his campaign to represent Illinois in the United States Senate with his victory in the March Democratic Party primary, his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July, and his election to the Senate in November. He began his presidential campaign in 2007 and, after a close primary campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008, he won sufficient delegates in the Democratic Party primaries to receive the presidential nomination. He then defeated Republican nominee John McCain in the general election, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months after his inauguration, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. During his first two years in office, Obama signed into law economic stimulus legislation in response to the Great Recession in the form of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. Other major domestic initiatives in his first term included the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often referred to as ´´Obamacare.´´ 1. Language: English. Narrator: Chadwick Palmatier. Barack Obama arrived in Washington in 2008 symbolizing the political change he promised on the campaign trail during his historic presidential victory. But in many ways, Washington changed Obama more than Obama changed Washington. This is the story of how the idealist of the 2008 campaign evolved into a hard-nosed pragmatist, shelving his promise of a new kind of politics to fight increasingly partisan budget battles and run a bare-knuckles re-election campaign. Through a series of articles and photographs published by The Washington Post, this audiobook outlines the change in his political personality during his four years in office, and describes his engagement with some of the most challenging issues he confronted during his time in office - and what his approach may mean for a second term should he win in November. 1.
