Bribery… coercion… intimidation. Sounds like a movie review of The Godfather, but unfortunately we’re talking about your federal government. So says best-selling author David Freddoso. In his new book, Gangster Government: Barack Obama and the New Washington Thugocracy, Freddoso exposes how the Obama administration bears a closer resemblance to the mob than to a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Laying bare the backdoor deals, threats, and pay-to-play schemes Obama uses to push his policies on unsuspecting voters, Gangster Government proves that Obama is more concerned with protecting his friends and punishing his enemies than doing right by the American public. In this shocking new book, Freddoso reveals: who really benefited from the auto industry bailout and the stimulus package (it wasn’t the car companies or the American people); how Obama and his EPA cronies are setting up a protection racket to control fossil fuels; why trial lawyers will benefit from Obamacare more than anyone else; and much more. Controversial and compelling, Gangster Government reveals an administration that is so corrupt, it would make Al Capone blush. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mike Chamberlain. From Cicero to Snooki, the cultural influences on our American presidents are powerful and plentiful. Thomas Jefferson famously said ´´I cannot live without books,´´ and his library backed up the claim, later becoming the backbone of the new Library of Congress. Jimmy Carter watched hundreds of movies in his White House, while Ronald Reagan starred in a few in his own time. Lincoln was a theater-goer, while Obama kicked back at home to a few episodes of HBO´s ´´The Wire´´. America is a country built by thinkers on a foundation of ideas. Alongside classic works of philosophy and ethics, however, our presidents have been influenced by the books, movies, TV shows, viral videos, and social media sensations of their day. In What Jefferson Read, Ike Watched, and Obama Tweeted: 200 Years of Popular Culturen in the White House presidential scholar and former White House aide Tevi Troy combines research with witty observation to tell the story of how our presidents have been shaped by popular culture. 1. 1. Sprache: Deutsch. Erzähler: Andrea Sawatzki, Hella von Sinnen, Dirk Bach. Last year the artist Richard Prince was sued by Patrick Cariou, a photographer, for copyright infringement. Prince had used dozens of Cariou’s pictures — arty portraits of Rastafarians in Jamaica — in his paintings. This practice of appropriation, incorporating other people´s work into new artworks, is well established in the art world, and Prince has based a successful career on it. But a federal judge ruled for Cariou last year, and if Prince loses his appeal, a swath of contemporary art making will become illegal. Then, Last month, we announced our Significant Object story contest. We picked out three objects from a thrift store — a doll ($5), a thermos with the Marlboro logo ($5), and a wooden trinket ($1). We want you to perform creative alchemy, turning the junk into treasure by giving it a backstory. It can be in the form of a short story, poem, encyclopedia article, comic, essay. After that, over the last decade, Kerry Washington has become well-known for terrific performances in movies like The Last King of Scotland and Ray. She’s now the star of her own new network series, which even today is a rare feat for an African-American actress. Following that, New Orleans may be the birthplace of jazz, but for the last couple of decades its most influential music has been the city´s Dirty South rap scene. The woozy celebration of ghetto life that Lil´ Wayne calls ´´gangsta gumbo´´ blurs the line between reflecting violence and glamorizing it. No small thing in a city with a murder rate ten times the national average. Then, over a couple of decades, Isabel Toledo quietly became one of the most sought-after fashion designers in the business. But in 2009, she experienced overnight global exposure. At the inauguration that January, amid a sea of dark suits, First Lady Michelle Obama stood out in a chic chartreuse lace dress and matching overcoat designed by Toledo. And finally, Sergio Munoz was only seven 1. The Supreme Court ruled on several landmark cases this week — not only the Affordable Healthcare Act, but also a challenge to Arizona´s controversial, and influential, immigration law. The court ruled that most, but not all, of the law was unconstitutional. It comes on the heels of President Obama’s announcement that his administration would not deport the 800,000 undocumented immigrants under 30 who arrived here as children. Next, the new movie Beasts of the Southern Wild is a Louisiana fairy tale with a six-year-old hero. Hushpuppy lives with her father in an isolated bayou netherworld they call the Bathtub, a tiny community of scavengers separated from the mainland by a levee. When a storm nearly washes the Bathtub away, Hushpuppy struggles to survive and to make sense of her perilous place in the universe. Then, just in time for Canada’s 145th birthday (July 1 is Canada Day, in case you forgot), Studio 360 gives our northern neighbor a brand makeover. For the last several weeks, we’ve been looking at the image challenge After that, Kurt Andersen and Jian Ghomeshi, the host of Q, the CBC´s daily arts and culture show go head to head in a cross-border cultural quiz. The North American showdown is the culmination to our month-long redesign project. While Studio 360 has been rebranding Canada, Q has been redesigning America. And finally, Canadian folk-rock musicians — Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Cowboy Junkies, k.d. lang, to name a few — have made it big south of the border while retaining something essentially Canadian in their music. Perhaps it’s a sense of longing born of Canada’s wide, empty spaces. [Broadcast Date: June 30, 2012] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt Andersen.
