Here is the biography of America's hottest political superstar, Barack Obama, from a journalist who has been covering Obama's career since his successful run for the US Senate. Barack Obama's meteoric rise is the stuff of legend. Since his headline-grabbing speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, Obama has come to represent the promise of unity among groups of all types: blacks and whites; Democrats, Republicans, and moderates; the upper, middle, and lower classes. In this groundbreaking biography, veteran journalist and Obama chronicler David Mendell gives an in-depth, comprehensive portrait of a man whose name has become a catchphrase for hope in a politically jaded society desperate for a new star. Mendell has covered Obama since the beginning of his Senate campaign and, as a result, enjoys far-reaching access to the new senator. His research includes exclusive interviews with Obama's closest aides, mentors, political adversaries, and family. Mendell reveals the surprising, cutthroat campaign tactics sanctioned by Obama - who has steeped his image and reputation in the ideals of clean politics and good government - which enabled him to win his Senate seat by employing some of the most ruthless operatives in the business. Eye-opening, well-researched, and compulsively listenable, Obama: From Promise to Power is a necessary look at the evolution of a politician from public servant to candidate-savior. 1. A series of audiobooks on the 2012 presidential election, Politico's Playbook 2012 provides an unprecedented real-time account of the race for the White House. The third edition, Obama's Last Stand, follows the reelection campaign of President Barack Obama as it struggles to find a winning formula in a political landscape that has changed dramatically since his history-making victory in 2008. Though battered and bruised after nearly four years in office, Barack Obama remains the most competitive player on the field in American politics today. In Obama's Last Stand, Politico White House correspondent Glenn Thrush chronicles the efforts of the president and his team to secure a second term in the face of a determined opposition, unfavorable economic headwinds, and a series of missteps by his own team. This is a revealing portrait of the president at the most precarious moment in his political life, with insights and anecdotes drawn straight from the notebook of one of the most perceptive reporters in America. The trash-talking schoolyard athlete in Obama is very much in evidence, especially when he speaks caustically about his Republican rivals, including the man he thinks is trying to steal his legacy, Mitt Romney. Yet apart from Romney and the uncertain economy, Obama's greatest obstacle on the road to reelection may be Obama 2008. He and his team of talented advisers must try to reconcile their nostalgia for that once-in-a-lifetime campaign with the realities of an election fundamentally altered by the advent of super PACs and the evaporation of Obama's superstar popularity. That challenge has led a campaign operation that once prided itself on flawless execution of strategy to commit several of the most dangerous unforced errors of Obama's political career. Yet the game is far from over. If Obama is sometimes his own worst enemy, he also has the talent and drive to reclaim this race. Spurred on by the realistic p 1. Language: English. The Turnaround Artist: The Life and Career of M...

In 2012, America's first African-American president, Barack Obama, will be running for reelection against one of the least conventional Republican politicians the country has ever had. From his Mormon faith to his governorship of the very blue Massachusetts, Mitt Romney has left many on the right wondering whether he possesses the traditional conservative values that they deem necessary, even as he has spent two straight Republican primary seasons burnishing his conservative credentials. On the other side, Romney's political career and ideology have led to charges by Democrats that he's a flip-flopper who will take whichever side of an issue is politically expedient at the time. Throw in the fact that many Americans of all political stripes view his forthright and serious demeanor as overly wooden and not personable, the very opposite of a natural politician like Bill Clinton, and people unfamiliar with Romney and his career must certainly be left wondering how he's on the verge of becoming the next President of the United States. Yet the former governor does indeed stand on the precipice of history, in the midst of an election that everyone anticipates will be a nail biter. 2012 is just the most recent chapter in the life of the turnaround artist, as he was known at Bain. In many ways, Romney's life and career have been a string of surprising successes. Dubbed a stiff, wooden politician, it was Mitt's outgoing personality that won over childhood sweetheart and wife of 40+ years Ann Davies. A jocular prankster in high school, seriousness was instilled in Romney during a mission in France in which he was badly injured in a car crash, with the woman sitting next to him killed in the wreck. The best known parts of Romney's career have also been about turnarounds. After becoming a student at both Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School simultaneously, Romney became a business superstar working as a consultant at Bain & Company, where he was dubb 1. With Point Made, legal writing expert, Ross Guberman, throws a life preserver to attorneys, who are under more pressure than ever to produce compelling prose. What is the strongest opening for a motion or brief? How to draft winning headings? How to tell a persuasive story when the record is dry and dense? The answers are 'more science than art,' says Guberman, who has analyzed stellar arguments by distinguished attorneys to develop step-by-step instructions for achieving the results you want. The author takes an empirical approach, drawing heavily on the writings of the nation's 50 most influential lawyers, including Barack Obama, John Roberts, Elena Kagan, Ted Olson, and David Boies. Their strategies, demystified and broken down into specific, learnable techniques, become a detailed writing guide full of practical models. In FCC v. Fox, for example, Kathleen Sullivan conjures the potentially dangerous, unintended consequences of finding for the other side (the 'Why Should I Care?' technique). Arguing against allowing the FCC to continue fining broadcasters that let the 'F-word' slip out, she highlights the chilling effect these fines have on America's radio and TV stations, 'discouraging live programming altogether, with attendant loss to valuable and vibrant programming that has long been part of American culture.' Each chapter of Point Made focuses on a typically tough challenge, providing a strategic roadmap and practical tips along with annotated examples of how prominent attorneys have resolved that challenge in varied trial and appellate briefs. Short examples and explanations with engaging titles—'Brass Tacks,' 'Talk to Yourself,' 'Russian Doll'—deliver weighty materials with a light tone, making the guidelines easy to remember and apply. In addition to all-new examples from the original 50 advocates, this Second Edition introduces eight new superstar lawyers from Solicitor General Don Verrilli, Deanne Maynard, Larry Robbins, and Lisa Blatt to Joshua Rosencranz, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Judy Clarke, and Sri Srinvasan, now a D.C. Circuit Judge. Ross Guberman also provides provocative new examples from the Affordable Care Act wars, the same-sex marriage fight, and many other recent high-profile cases. Considerably more commentary on the examples is included, along with dozens of style and grammar tips interspersed throughout. Also, for those who seek to improve their advocacy skills and for those who simply need a step-by-step guide to making a good brief better, the book concludes with an all-new set of 50 writing challenges corresponding to the 50 techniques.
